What is MetaLetters?

The MetaLetters Collective, powered by Metaversal, is a community designed to spotlight and empower digital creators exploring the Web3 space. Creators from around the globe joined the Collective by crafting and submitting a MetaLetter—a unique, handmade art piece reimagining one of Metaversal’s 10 letters (M-E-T-A-V-E-R-S-A-L).

Once accepted, these creators gain access to opportunities for amplification and activation, connecting them to the larger Metaversal ecosystem.

The Project

The MetaLetters project was a multifaceted initiative where I collaborated with a team to create a community of artists, build a minting mechanism for their artwork, design a mobile AR app for an activation scavenger hunt, and develop metaverse worlds to exhibit the artists’ work—while showcasing the strength of our community.

Project Design

I contributed to the overall design and strategy of the project, including developing a Nouns-inspired daily minting strategy and designing the minting landing page. These elements laid the foundation for the community-driven minting process and helped streamline user interaction with the artwork.

Artist Curation

As part of the artist curation process, I worked to source artists from Metaversal’s network. I commissioned artists to create letters in their unique styles and provided guidance on how to mint their works, especially for those who were not web3 native. This was an important educational opportunity for onboarding new artists into the world of on-chain art.

A personal highlight of this process was working with my mother, a mixed media artist, to help her create her own MetaLetter (the "S"), which became part of the core collection.

AR App Development

In an effort to make the letters more immersive and interactive, we partnered with Spheroid Universe to build an augmented reality (AR) experience. We transformed 3D renderings of the letters (selected by the community to represent the key letters of M-E-T-A-V-E-R-S-A-L) into AR objects. These objects were then placed at specific geo-located spots across New York City.

Users could download the MetaLetters app, follow a map, and visit each geo-located waypoint. Once at a waypoint, they could point their phones at the sky to see the letters floating larger-than-life in AR.

This provided a unique and engaging experience that allowed users to explore the art in a real-world setting. It also gave great exposure to the artists, as they could share their experiences and screenshots on social media, helping to amplify the Metaversal brand.

MetaLetters at CADAF

With AR being a large focus at CADAF, it was a natural fit for MetaLetters to partner on a special AR activation at the CADAF Art Fair in NYC.

We curated artist submissions to spell "Metaversal" and hosted an AR activation just outside the venue where CADAF took place.

Launched in 2017, CADAF is a digital art marketplace supported by IRL and virtual art fairs, festivals, pop up shows, advisory and more. CADAF caters to artists, curators, collectors, Web3 curious and art market professionals around the world.

MetaLetters at DMINTI

We advanced the mission of promoting Web3 art in innovative spaces through a partnership with DMINTI, a cultural agency that collaborates with leading contemporary and emerging artists across digital and traditional art mediums to curate, produce, and present impactful NFT art.

Together, we curated an art space themed around "crypto-anARTchism," celebrating the art of the cypherpunk movement. The exhibition featured works by artists such as Big Comic Art, Brian Romero, and CypherPunk Now, alongside pieces from the Metaversal collection, including rare Pepes and MetaLetters commissioned for the show.

Recap

To extend the experience, we hosted and live-streamed an opening and closing reception in the gallery.

Reflections

The MetaLetters project was multifaceted, offering me the opportunity to flex a wide range of skills, including app and website design, partnerships, community growth, artist collaboration, art curation, AR activations, event production, and project management. Working on a small, agile team required a high level of autonomy and trust, both within the team and in our collaborations with partners and artists.

On a larger scale, my hope was to contribute to onboarding more people into web3, sparking their curiosity about an on-chain future. Recognizing that not everyone is drawn to the financial aspects of crypto, the project highlighted how art, NFTs, and virtual spaces can create pathways for engagement. By blending emerging technologies with creativity, MetaLetters demonstrated the power of community and innovation in shaping this new virtual frontier for both newcomers and industry veterans alike.
